I had already had in interest in conservation before I graduated college and getting a job in the field has definitely opened my mind to the many other different fields that I, in the past, have overlooked. I watched this video on tiktok that really made me feel that not only is becoming an archeologist possible for me but it almost might soothe my interal and mental confilictions with being a human being. Seeing people live thier lives through different hardships. I know I could just look at the present for that but this pain and confusion feels so innate and insatiable, like its been festering and the only way I know how to come to terms with is it, is to understand what are some of the things that we consistently do over the course of thousands of years.
Summary:
In this video specifically, she talks about studying archeology. How the field superficially seems very scientific, but the more you dive into it the more it becomes so human. She talks about how many archeological sites are graveyards. She elaborates into how humans have since the beginning of time have had to thoughtfully pick out which headstone, which items to leave with the dead, what fonts to use. That each of those things were done with so much care. “ […]someone somewhere thought that the burden of losing someone was so heavy that they could not bear to see the things they lived with as well.” As she continues to explain, in learning these things about the past she was able to reconcile with her younger self about the death of her younger brother. The choices she made were choices that everyone has had to make since the start of mankind. “[…] it is a statement to whoever is passing by… I think that’s immortality in itself […] that saying goodbye lasts so, so many years".”
